Week Two – Quiz

The first attempt at the quiz, I did without reviewing the book as I wanted to test my knowledge as it was. I got three questions wrong:

  • Have seen as a past completed tense, should be present completed tense.
  • An intransitive verb instead of an inactive verb.
  • The comma question fooled me as it asked for the “most correct answer”. The two that matched the question confused me and I decided to go with all of the above.

Disappointed with myself. Admittedly, these are not things one needs to consider in everyday life. I guess now I do.

Twitters top hits the same across the Western World?

On a worldwide scale Twitters top hits vary with culture. In the Western world this revolves around celebrities and sports with politics a close contender. Some of the top local tweets today are #SelfieForTheDolanTwins, Ted Cruz and #bnefog. The filter used was Australia, Brisbane. The comparison is between the Brisbane filter and the worldwide (with no filter). Within the English speaking sphere, the top tweets are the same regardless of country or culture. The diverse age demographic that Twitter appeals to reflects this as the figures between 18-54 are all close.

At times a local concern rears up, such as the Brisbane fog.

These are short lived and the stronger tweets such as Ted Cruz, which has been at the top of the list for many days, overshadows them. News sector articles such as, “Ted Cruz Mounts the Convention Stage in the Role of Brutus,” (Flegenheimer and Steinhauer, 2016) helps drive this ongoing tweet.

As a new issue comes to hand the tweetosphere seems to go crazy with multiple tweets about the same subject. On the whole though, they are quite diverse and there can be little linking them aside from the category i.e. politics or celebrity.

The age demographic of Twitter, especially compared to other social media networks, is quite diverse and this reflects in the top hits. The world appears to be getting much smaller as likes and interests become so similar that it is difficult to distinguish between countries and cultures.

For better or for worse, we can now communicate quicker and simpler than ever and twitter is at the forefront of this evolution.
